The Boy Who Never Blinked

There was once a baby born who did not blink!  His mother did not at first notice that her child did not blink, but eventually as time passed it occurred to her, my son does not blink.  She decided to remain calm and just observe him more closely.

Years passed and still she never saw him blink and she panicked!  By this time the boy was nearly four years old!  He seemed like a perfectly healthy boy.  He was smart, well behaved, used his words, fully potty trained, but he did not blink!

She took her son to the doctor and finally brought it up with the doctor.  "Doctor, in the nearly four years of my son's life, I have never, once seen him blink!"  she nervously stated.  "What could this mean?  What if he doesn't blink?  What will happen?!"

The doctor laughed off her concerns, "Ah, do not worry, your son is a good boy in excellent health.  I'm sure he blinks, you just haven't caught him doing so."  The doctor looked at the boy and muffed up his hair a bit and stated, "you blink just fine don't you.  Let's show your mother that you do indeed blink.  As a boy, I was the champion at blinking contests in my school.  I could outlast anyone in a blinking contest, so much so that I still compete and win every year at the town fair.  So lets you and I have our own little blinking contest and show your mom that you do blink."

The boy agreed and sat up straight on the doctor's table.  The doctor pulled off his glasses, blinked hard a few times and lowered his head to the boys face and stared hard into the boys eyes and said "on the count of 3 - 3 2 1"

The mother watched as the boy and the doctor pierced into one another's eyes.  Neither moved, they barely breathed.  This went on for what seemed like an endless period.  A drop of sweat appeared on the doctor's balled head and slowly made its way down his forehead.  Fortunately his right eyebrow captured the seat and steered it away from his eye.

The two continued to stare intensely, until the doctor could no longer hold his eyes open and he blinked.  In disbelief, the doctor looked at the boy and said "I have never lost a blinking contest!  My, my boy, you can certainly state without a blink for a long time."

The doctor turned to the mother and said "Mom, I'm sure your son blinks, but it is quite amazing how long he can go without a blink.  I have never lost!  Here, I have saline drops, just go ahead and put a drop in each of his eyes each evening, I'm sure that he is fine and you have nothing to worry about."

Later that fall, the child read a flyer for the town fair and was very excited to go as his mother took him every year.  As they spent their Sunday roaming around the fair, enjoying rides and contests, the boy noticed his doctor on a small stage, the doctors arm being raised by an announcer.  "And once again the doc appears to be the winner of the town blinking contest!  Would anyone else like to challenge the Doc?"  And without a moment's pause, the mother saw her son step to the stage.

The announcer giggled as he saw the young boy reach high with his legs to take the three stairs to the stage.  "It seems that we have a young challenger!  Hello son, would you like to take on the Doc here in the Stare Contest?"  "Yes, sir" the boy replied.  The announcer, reached for a chair off the stage and said, "we'll lets have you stand up on this chair so you can look the Doc in the eye."

Once settled at even heights, the announcer counted down.  The Doc was already sweating looking at the boy and grumbling to himself.  "All right everyone, we have one more staring contest for our champ... on the count of 3 - 3 2 1."

The sun gleamed high in the sky as it was about noon on this warm fall day.  The Doc and the Boy stared piercingly into one another's eyes.  They did not move for what seemed an eternity.  More and more people crowded around the small stage.  Minutes passed that felt like hours!  Until finally, the Doctor collapsed to his knees, closing his eyes and putting his hands to his eyes as he screeched "NOOOOOOOO."  One big breath burst from the audience followed by an applause.  And the announcer lifted the arm of the little boy as he handed him the winner's bounty - $50 check!  His mother ran up and hugged her son, "My boy, you may not blink, but you will be the town's Staring Contest Champ and we can start your college fund!"
